Q&A with Tom and Jennifer Lourence
2023 Kenton K. Brown Sente Spirit Award Recipient

Tom: First, what was going through your mind when you heard that you are the recipient of the Kenton K. Brown Sente Spirit Award? What was your first reaction?

Jennifer: It was just shocking. You know, looking back over the previous winners, many of them are in operations because they have more of a presence within the company. They deal with more people. Or someone like a Branch Manager—somebody that has more of a footprint. It was just shocking to hear my name called for the award. It’s a beautiful, beautiful award and I’m just very honored.

Tom: Why don’t you share a little bit about Jennifer, the award winner, that others in the organization might not know?

Jennifer: I grew up in Minnesota and lived there until I was married at 18. Then I moved to Germany for three years. I spent time in Mainz, Germany, and also Hano, Germany. After that I came back to the United States and lived in Alabama, Kentucky, and Texas. I ended up in Killeen, Texas, about 25 years ago, and I’ve been here ever since.

Tom: So you traveled quite a bit, ended up in Texas, and then stayed in Killeen since then?

Jennifer: Yes, my husband is Captain in the Killeen Police Department. His job is here in the city of Killeen, so we’ll probably be here until we retire.

Tom: Now that you’re not traveling around the world, what do you like to do when you’re not working and you have free time?

Jennifer: My husband and I still like to travel. We like to go to different places. Last year we went to the Grand Canyon, and our goal is to see more national parks. And at least once a year we like to go see my family in Minnesota or South Dakota.

Tom: So tell me how you got into the mortgage business?

Jennifer: It was strictly by chance. I applied for a receptionist position at a local bank. After a few months they downsized, and I ended up in the mortgage department of that branch. They wanted me to do loan setup, so I started doing that. After that I became an assistant processor, then processor. And then I started training processors. So it just kind of evolved over time as I was doing more and more with mortgage loans.

Tom: What do you love about being in the mortgage business?

Jennifer: I like helping people accomplish their goals. I think getting a home is one of the best financial decisions that people can make in their lives. Equity that you have in your home is going to increase. I like helping them achieve that goal of getting a house. And there have been many people throughout the years that you remember, because they’re so appreciative. Imparting my knowledge to them and making them feel comfortable, that’s what I appreciate about being in mortgages.

Tom: We talked about what you did for fun. But I also understand that you’re a big dog lover. So tell me, how many dogs do you have?

Jennifer: I have four dogs and one cat. I have Bailey, she’s the oldest. She’s a heeler mix and she’s about 12. We have Boba, named after Star Wars. She’s a black lab, and she’s about 6. We have a chocolate lab named Daisy, she’s about 3. Last year my husband was driving to work and saw a dog running on the side of the road. He stopped, she jumped into his truck and now we have a new puppy name Dalia. The cat demands attention—my current cat is Rogue and she’s a mama’s baby.

Tom: When we looked at the nominations and we saw what people wrote about you, you’ve done some remarkable stuff this last year for the company, and we’re grateful!

Jennifer: I am very honored. I’m still in shock over winning the award. Thank you. Thank you so much.

Introducing Sente’s New Branch in Dahlonega, Georgia!

We are thrilled that “The Golden Team” of Dahlonega, Georgia, has joined the Sente Mortgage family. Here’s a short Q&A with Branch Manager Clay Christy to get to know them better.

Q: What is your favorite thing about Dahlonega, Georgia?
A: It’s almost impossible to pick one favorite thing about this wonderful town! A good part of my family lives here, I went to college here, the town is a wonderful mix of nature and amenities! We’ve got amazing places to fish, kayak, hike and bike ride as well as great shopping, some world class chocolate shops, tons of wineries (we’re known as the Napa Valley of the south) and a wonderful hospital system! Plus, we're just an hour away from Atlanta.

Q: What three words best describe The Golden Team of Sente Mortgage?
A: Committed, resourceful, compassionate.

Q: What is your favorite quote?
A: “One day the people who didn’t believe you will tell others how they met you.”

Q: What is your favorite thing about being in the mortgage industry?
A: Undoubtedly, it’s the smiles and often tears of happiness on the faces of buyers, sitting anxiously at the closing table, signing documents that they never really thought they would get to see. People who have always been told they were destined to forever be a renter or someone who has been turned down by other banks and lenders—it is truly a blessing to have a part in changing people’s lives!

Q: What activities or hobbies do you and your team have outside of work?
A: Cory and I are both avid fishermen and command a pretty mean doubles team on a ping-pong table! I love to kayak as well. Karen tends a wonderful farm with a variety of animals fit for a petting zoo and she’s also a falconer. She trains and hunts with her red-tailed hawk named Zephyr.

Q: Which of Sente’s Core Values speaks to you most and why?
A: It’s difficult to parse the Core Values and simply choose one as they all intertwine with the vision the team and I have for our Branch. In our short time with Sente, every interaction we’ve had with any Sente teammate has made us feel welcome. We want to have that same approach to every client we serve. We have a long term goal to serve this community and to help as many deserving families achieve the dream of home ownership, to use the tools and resources provided to increase the Sente brand and footprint throughout the southeast and to have every person we touch on a daily basis feel loved and appreciated.

Welcome Clay, Cory, and Karen!

I am Anika Storey, and currently live in Fort Worth, TX. I am married and have two little boys who I adore. They are so full of energy and constantly keep me on my toes. I attended University of the Southwest earning a degree in Psychology in 2014. In my free time I love to work out, travel, seek out new adventures, be outdoors and spend time with family and friends.

I have been in the mortgage industry for a little over 3 years now and truly like working in the fast-paced environment. I love how Sente values teamwork, working cohesively and collaboratively towards helping clients with one of the biggest investments of their lives.

As an Appraisal Desk Coordinator, I appreciate the opportunity to contribute to the smooth operation of the mortgage process. I value the collaborative aspect of the role, working closely with appraisers, bankers, and other team members to achieve one common goal—homeownership for our clients.

Social Media Security

The following best practices are recommended to protect your information within the Social Media landscape. These practices were referenced on the website Social Champ.

  • Use Strong Passwords: One of the fundamental steps in securing your social media accounts is creating strong, unique passwords. Avoid using easily guessable passwords. Instead, opt for complex combinations of letters, numbers, and special characters.
  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second form of verification, in addition to your password. This could be a code sent to your mobile device via SMS or generated by an authenticator app.
  • Be Cautious with Third-Party Apps: Third-party apps often request access to your social media accounts for various purposes, such as analytics or integration with other services. Before granting permissions, carefully review the access requested by the app and consider the necessity of granting such permissions.
  • Regularly Review Privacy Settings: Social media platforms offer granular privacy settings that allow you to control who can see your posts, send you friend requests, or access your personal information. Take the time to review and adjust these settings according to your preferences.
  • Limit Personal Information: Be mindful of the personal information you share on social media platforms. Avoid posting sensitive details, such as your home address, phone number, or financial information publicly.
  • Beware of Phishing Attempts: Phishing is a common tactic used by cybercriminals to trick individuals into revealing sensitive information or login credentials. Be vigilant of suspicious messages or emails claiming to be from social media platforms.
  • Stay Updated: Keep your social media apps and devices up to date with the latest security patches and updates. Developers regularly release updates to address security vulnerabilities and enhance overall security.
  • Educate Yourself: Stay informed about common social engineering tactics and scams prevalent on social media platforms. Educate yourself about the warning signs of phishing attempts, fake accounts, or malicious links.
  • Use Secure Connections: When accessing your social media accounts, ensure you’re using secure and trusted networks. Avoid logging in to your accounts on public Wi-Fi networks or unsecured connections, as these can be compromised by malicious actors.
  • Regularly Monitor Activity: Frequently monitor your social media accounts for any unusual activity or unauthorized access. Keep an eye out for unrecognized logins, suspicious messages, or changes to your account settings.

Header_Banner-Paula

Q: Where are you located?
A: I live in the outskirts of Columbia South Carolina, just far enough out to be considered a rural area. Perfect for my mini-farm.

Q: How long have you been in the mortgage industry?
A: I’ve been in the mortgage industry since I was 3 years old, but seriously, I’m working on year 28 now!

Q: Who or what inspired you to pursue an underwriting career?
A: I am a problem solver at heart, now that doesn’t mean I want all the hard files, but I’m not afraid to tackle a challenge.  Plus, I just love helping people. As underwriter I help make sound decisions for my company and for our clients. I don’t like setting people up to fail, I like to enable them to excel.

Q: Which Sente Value most resonates with you and why?
A: All the Sente values align with my own personal values, but the one that stands out the most is “Care So Much We Make a Difference”. The home buying or refinancing process can be an extremely stressful time for all the parties involved. I like to take the extra time to explain the WHY behind the process, the Teachers Approach I call it. Also, I stress that WE are all in this together and together we can make that difference.

Q: How would you describe your job to a group of five-year-olds?
A: My main job is to help people get a home of their own, by making sure they can afford and keep that home as long as they want. I review lots and lots of paperwork to ensure they are making good decisions about the when, how, and what home they are buying.

Q: What is your favorite thing about your job?
A: I love feeling like I really do make a difference. I have to say, everyone at Sente Mortgage has been so welcoming, I feel like there is a true camaraderie in the structure here and I am glad to be a part of this.
